Self Watering Container and Coleus Planter Growth
Here are some photos for you to consider.  The first photo  shows a Kong Coleus and elephant ears combination when they were first set into a half rain barrel that I modified  into a self-waterer.  The second photo is the same planter after only 6 weeks (growing in a part shade area).  You can see the coleus reaching into the canopy of the background Japanese maple along with the elephant ears.  And it just got bigger and better until frost  hit it in early November.

Note The Reach into The Background Tree

Stepping back for the long view, here’s what the converted container looked like midway in the season with the purple-leaved Japanese maple framing it.

By the end of the season, it had grown well over the crotch of the tree and was on its way to the top before a November frost killed it.  Go back to the left side of this site and click on “It’s Not About the Water” to see what’s happening INSIDE the container that causes this phenomenal growth in such a short time.  You’ll be amazed!
